Woman Painting
4. Who were the Fauvists and what did they believe about art?

The Fauves were a group of French artists in about 1905 whose work was considered so different and unusual they were called "Les Fauves" by one critic and this meant "Wild Beasts". They did not all paint the same way but they all agreed that they didn't like Impressionism.

(Impressionism was a painting style where artists tried to show true colour and light in their paintings)

The Fauves liked to use strong bright colour and  unrealistic forms to make their paintings more emotional and decorative rather than realistic. Henri Matisse is probably the most well known of the Fauves.
